What Nobody Tells You About the First 30 Days Sober (The Honest Truth)

The first 30 days of sobriety are strange. Not what most people expect.

Everyone talks about willpower. Nobody talks about what actually happens to your body, your sleep, your social life — and your sense of self — when you stop drinking.

I've been through it. Here's what I wish someone had told me before day one.

The Sleep Gets Worse Before It Gets Better

This one blindsided me. You'd think without alcohol you'd sleep better. The opposite happens first.

Alcohol suppresses REM sleep. When you stop, your brain goes into overdrive trying to catch up. Vivid dreams. Waking up at 3am. Lying there with your thoughts louder than they've ever been.

It passes. But nobody warns you it's coming.

The Anxiety Nobody Mentions

Alcohol is a depressant. It slows everything down. When you remove it, your nervous system doesn't know what to do with itself.

For the first couple of weeks I felt anxious in a way I hadn't since I was a teenager. Heart racing. Overthinking everything. On edge for no obvious reason.

That's not weakness. That's your brain recalibrating. It's normal. And it does settle down.

Not Knowing How to Socialise Sober

This one hit me harder than I expected.

I'd been drinking at social events for so long that I genuinely didn't know how to just... be there. Without a drink in my hand. Without that social lubricant.

The footy. Work functions. Family gatherings. Suddenly everything felt awkward in a way it hadn't since I was a teenager at a party.

The honest truth? You have to relearn how to be social. And that takes time. But the connections you make sober are real in a way that drunk ones rarely are.

The Moment You Realise It's Worth It

Somewhere around week three or four, something shifts.

Your head gets clearer. You start sleeping properly. You notice things — small things — that you'd been too foggy to appreciate.

The discomfort of the first 30 days isn't punishment. It's your body and mind doing the work of coming back to life.

If You're in Your First Month Right Now

You're doing the hardest part. The part most people never attempt.

You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to get through today. Then tomorrow. Day by day.

If you want support from someone who's been through it — not a hotline, not a therapist, just a real person who gets it — that's exactly what Still Standing Co is here for.
